Assistive technology (AT) may serve as a tool or system of tools to improve the academic and/or functional performance of students. However, there are often questions that arise about how to meaningfully integrate AT into students’ Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) and Transition Plans. These questions relate to providing quality AT services through considering the need for AT, determining how to effectively match AT to a student’s needs, incorporating AT into the IEP/Transition Plan, developing an effecting plan for AT implementation, and evaluating the effectiveness of AT for a student. Each of these needs to be considered through the lens of helping to foster successful post-school outcomes, self-determination, and independence. The purpose of this session is to provide participants with a framework and tools to help with the delivery of quality AT services in the context of transition planning. Participants will gain an understanding of processes that help to foster quality AT services along with tools and strategies they can employ when engaging in transition planning.
