Assistive technology departments face the need to redesign services and roles to remain effective in school settings. Restructuring assistive technology departments/services to meet the needs of current school environments requires understanding change forces impacting public education and how those forces impact individual departments/services, such as assistive technology. This presentation reviews current research around assistive technology program redesign. It discusses the roles research has identified for assistive technology departments in schools and depicts specific change forces impacting public education and assistive technology departments/services that are predicating this change. Research results are detailed through discussion and direct experience restructuring and redesigning the assistive technology department in a special education cooperative.
