The ATP Education Program is proud to partner with ESU 3 to bring the ESU 3 Regional AT Training Series.
Participants who engage in the ESU 3 Regional l AT Training Series will learn about how to provide quality assistive technology services to children and students receiving special education services. The series consists of 5 1-hour sessions. Participation will be tracked and reported to participants' administrators. Successful completion of the training series results in certificates of completion along with an optional Digital Badge Microcredential. Live sessions will be offered at pre-determined times. If individuals wish to work toward the Digital Badge Microcredential, they will need to register separately (COMING SOON) to complete the microcredential requirements. Working toward the Digital Badge Microcredential may be done asynchronously.
Each live session is noted below. Registration is required for each individual session.
Session 1: Understanding AT and AT Consideration
January 21, 2021, 3:00 PM – 4:00PM (CT)
Register for Session 1: Understanding AT and AT Consideration (Live Session)
-
Description
-
What is assistive technology anyway? This session focuses to answer that question as well as other questions related to AT processes and AT services. It may serve as an introduction for some or a review for others. Essential quality AT services for children and students with disabilities starts with having a core understanding of AT. This session will also explore processes related to AT consideration. AT consideration is the process by which we answer the question, “Does a student need AT?” and it is also a legal mandate within special education law. This session covers key areas that go into quality AT consideration within the context of an IEP or an IFSP.
-
-
Learning Objectives
-
After participating in this session, participants will
-
state a functional definition of AT that defines the scope and purpose of AT
-
identify a process used to provide quality AT services to children and students
-
summarize AT services that are defined in special education law that apply to all students receiving special education services.
-
identify the three outcomes of an AT consideration process
-
describe when a child/student may need AT tools/systems and AT Services

Session 2: Evaluation of AT Needs, Part 1 – Gathering and Analyzing
February 18, 2021, 3:00 PM – 4:00PM (CT)
Register for Session 2: Evaluation of AT Needs, Part 1 – Gathering and Analyzing (Live Session)
-
Description
-
Determining the AT needs of a child or student is the responsibility of the IFSP or the IEP team. This two-part series focuses on a process that may be used to evaluate the AT needs of a child or student. In this session, participants will learn about reviewing background data in order to begin to identify potential AT needs. A variety of tools will be explored to help this process. .
-
-
Learning Objectives
-
After participating in this session, individuals will
-
define what it means to look at a child's/student's skills from a human function perspective
-
discuss a framework to guide the evaluation of AT needs process
-
describe areas to discuss and analyze in determining potential AT needs
-
-
Session 3: Evaluation of AT Needs, Part 2 – Feature Matching and Tool Trials
March 22, 2021, 3:00 PM – 4:00PM (CT)
-
Description
-
Determining the AT needs of a child or student is the responsibility of the IFSP or the IEP team. This two-part series focuses on a process that may be used to evaluate the AT needs of a child or student. In this session, participants will discover the feature matching process that helps to identify potential AT tools/systems to meet the individual AT needs of a child or student. Opportunities to ask questions will be included in the session. Participants will also learn about how to conduct tool trials and employ the Time Series Concurrent and Differential (TSCD) approach to collect data in order to determine the most probable match between the student and potential AT solutions.
-
-
Learning Objectives
-
After participating in this session, individuals will
-
describe the steps involved in a feature matching process
-
identify strategies for defining key features of potential AT tools/systems
-
apply the feature match process in identifying and analyzing potential AT tools/systems
-
explain the steps within the Time Series Concurrent and Differential approach
-
identify conclusions from potential scenarios using the TSCD approach when conducting tool trials
-
identify at least three factors that need to be considered when conducting tool trials

Session 4: AT in the IEP/IFSP and AT Implementation
April 15, 2021, 3:00 PM – 4:00PM (CT)
Register for Session 4: AT in the IEP/IFSP and AT Implementation (Live Session)
-
Description
-
Once AT has been identified for a child or a student, how should teams meaningfully integrate the AT tools/system into a child's IFSP or a student's IEP? This session explores components of IFSPs and IEPs that may contain information about AT and offers examples for how to meaningfully integrate the AT into IFSPs/IEPs. This session also focuses on areas to consider in developing an effective AT implementation plan in the context of a child's IFSP or a student's IEP. Example templates will be shared that may be used in drafting such a plan.
-
-
Learning Objectives
-
After participating in this session, individuals will
-
identify at least 2 areas in which AT may be integrated into an IFSP
-
identify at least 7 areas in which AT may be integrated into an IEP
-
explain a rationale for each area of an IEP/IFSP in which AT may be integrated
-
identify at least 5 areas in which an effective AT implementation plan should cover
-
analyze the pros and cons of AT implementation plan examples
-
Session 5: Wrapping it Up: AT Assessment and Progress Monitoring
May 10, 2021, 3:00 PM – 4:00PM (CT)
Register for Session 5: Wrapping it Up: AT Assessment and Progress Monitoring (Live Session)
-
Description
-
So, a child or a student is using AT in the context of their IFSP or IEP. How do we know that the AT is working? How do we know if the child/student still needs the AT? This session focuses on engaging in effective AT assessment and progress monitoring practices that use data collection and data analysis practices to inform the degree to which the AT tool/system is impacting the child's/student's progress.
-
-
Learning Objectives
-
After participating in this session, individuals will
-
identify conclusions from potential scenarios using the TSCD approach when engaging in AT assessment and progress monitoring
-
determine how results of AT assessment and progress monitoring may impact the next steps in an AT cycle
-
