Designing an Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom Series - Temporal Environment with Beth Poss

The Temporal Environment includes the management of the daily structure of routines, activities, and transitions. This session will examine resources that support educators in establishing predictable routines and supporting students in managing changes to routine activities. We will explore resources to create visual schedules, support transitions between activities, and help young learners complete tasks. Viewers will learn how to critically examine their current classroom and consider modifications that they can make to the temporal environment that supports play, communication, and learning.

Designing an Inclusive Early Childhood Classroom Series - The Physical Environment with Beth Poss

The basis of every early childhood program is the learning environment; the physical, social, and temporal spaces where children will interact, grow and develop. This series will highlight best practices in early childhood settings, for a diverse population including students with and without disabilities, that provide for the active, inclusive, and meaningful participation of ALL young learners. We will focus on how to leverage accessible resources in any universally designed early childhood setting, including the creation of visual supports, resources for communication, and engaging, accessible curriculum materials. The Physical Environment includes the selection and physical layout of space, arrangement of furniture and resources, as well as lighting and floor coverings, and the creation and organization of learning centers. In this session, we will examine how educators can structure their physical environment to promote inclusive learning opportunities for students with disabilities. Viewers will learn how to critically examine their current classroom and consider modifications that they can make to the physical environment that supports play, communication, and learning. Participants will be able to 1. Define the 3 environmental components of a Universally Designed for Learning early childhood classroom 2. Reflect on 4 changes that they can make in their current classroom to create a more Universally Designed for Learning environment 3. Identify at least 4 powerful instructional practices with students in an inclusive early childhood setting

Technology Tools to Support Early Literacy - Early Writing Tools

This session will explore strategies and resources that support young children in exploring writing tools, moving from drawing and scribbling to making letters, and establishing an understanding of the power of expressing their own thoughts in print as the foundations for early writing skills. We will examine instructional routines and resources that help young learners develop as emergent writers. The session will examine both digital and low tech resources that are integral components of successful early literacy programming. There will be a specific focus on ensuring that early literacy instruction is accessible to children with communication and physical disabilities. Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to: 1. Describe 2 ways that early writing can be supported by digital technology 2. Describe 2 ways that early writing can be supported by low tech resources 3. Identify 2 resources that educators can provide access to literacy instruction for young children with communication and/or physical disabilities

Early Childhood Technology Apps for Language Development with Beth Poss

This session will build on the information presented in Session 1 and examine selected apps and technology resources that can be powerful tools to support language development through play for young children, including those with language delays and who may be using alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). We will apply the considerations for choosing an effective early childhood technology learning resource to examine apps that promote receptive and expressive language development. The session will also focus on strategies for educators and families to use these resources not simply as something to entertain their child, but to build the skills that children need to be effective communicators. Learning Outcome - Identify 3 effective apps in both of the areas of language and problem solving

Early Childhood Mathematics Series: Session 2 - Block Play & Shapes with Beth Poss

March 2, 2022

This series will help educators understand the development of conceptual mathematical skills, how to build a foundation for mathematical thinking, and how to adapt mathematics instruction to make it accessible and meaningful to early math learners. Participants will gain an understanding of the progression of math skill development in young learners, and how to foster this in students with disabilities. We will examine how exploration with a variety of physical and digital resources can aid in the understanding of mathematical concepts, and how to provide adaptations for students with a range of disabilities. Learn how everyday routines and activities can build the foundations of mathematics competence in young children. Session 2: Block Play and Shapes Block play encompasses a developmental continuum of skills that is critical to the later development of mathematical skills related to geometry and measurement. This session will focus on increasing educators' understanding of the continuum of block and shape play and how to foster this in young children with developmental delays. Go beyond dump and fill and knocking down blocks and explore how using blocks and shapes in increasingly complex play schemes enhances mathematical competence.
