AT Adoption vs Abandonment: Implementation (Part 5/8) with Sayard Bass

The fifth of eight presentations focuses on Implementation and how forward thought and planning can set you up for a more successful outcome. As discussed previously, difficulties with the device as well as issues with services can push a student toward abandonment. When a team is able to plan ahead and knows what questions to ask while planning, hopefully, the influence can be swayed toward the adoption of AT.

Objectives:
● List the five pieces of a successful implementation plan according to Socol (2008).

AT Adoption vs Abandonment: Introduction (Part 2/8) with Sayard Bass

The second of eight presentations focus on the concept of abandonment. Two studies, one from 1993 and another from 2016 show similar factors can be responsible for a user deciding not to use a device. This section highlights the influence of the device itself as well as the providing team can influence a decision to abandon the use of assistive technology.

Objectives:
● Identify at least two ways an AT Device can impact the abandonment of a device.
● Identify at least two ways AT Services can impact the abandonment of a device.

AT Adoption vs Abandonment: Consideration (Part 4/8) with Sayard Bass

The fourth of eight presentations focuses on AT Consideration. While this is legally mandated for all IEPs, it is still an area in which some teams struggle. From previous sections, we know that the device we choose can have an impact on the student’s future use of the device. This section makes connections between models of consideration and how they can help guide a team to become better decision-makers through using a model of consideration.

Objectives:
● Be able to reference the sections of IDEA which pertain to consideration.
● List three models which can help with consideration.

AT Adoption vs Abandonment: Cycle of AT (Part 7/8) with Sayard Bass

The seventh of eight presentations focuses on the assistive technology cycle. As we have learned, at times abandonment can happen due to a student outgrowing a device, or their environment and expectations changing. It is important to continually service, revisit, and review a student’s AT to keep them moving forward on a path toward independent AT use.

Objectives:
● Name the parts of the AT Cycle.
● Describe how the AT cycle works with one model of consideration.

AT Adoption vs Abandonment: Data Collection (Part 6/8) with Sayard Bass

The sixth of eight presentations focuses on how collecting and analyzing data can give early signs when a student is moving either toward adoption and mastery or abandonment of recommended AT. The QIAT indicators repeatedly mention reviewing, reassessing, and analyzing data, though what are the ways to do that? This section gives some ideas which can fit into a team and student’s day.

Objectives:
● Name the four competencies which demonstrate student skills.
● Give one example of subjective vs. objective data collection.
